কথা দিচ্ছি , আর এমন হবেনা ।  বঙ্গসম্মেলন চলছে , চলবে।

Briefly about Kalipradip Chaudhuri

On Monday, August 14, 2023, TriState Bulletin contacted KPC - Kalipradip  Chaudhuri for an in-depth conversation with the California-based Bengali business tycoon an MD, FACIP, FAAPC, FICS, FAAOS, FACS, Chairman of the KPC Group of Industries - a  global company.  KPC, Kalipradip  Chaudhuri is an orthopedic surgeon and entrepreneur, who has amassed over $10 billion in assets, including hospitals, clinics, schools, commercial real estate properties, and agricultural research centers.

Since 1984 he has been donating generously to support NABC - Bongo Sammelan. This year, his philanthropic organization KPC Bengali Hall of Fame was the host of NABC 2023, held at Atlantic City, New Jersey, on June 30th, July 1st and 2nd, 2023.

Briefly about NABC

The North American Bengali Conference (NABC) is an annual Bengali culture conference held in the United States and Canada, typically around the weekend of July 4. It was established in 1981 by the Cultural Association of Bengal in New York and is hosted by a different organization every year. The conference includes cultural performances, readings, discussions, networking, and class reunions.

Performers are often from the United States, Canada, Bangladesh, and India. Audiences are primarily Bangladeshi Americans, Indian Americans, Bangladeshi Canadians, and Indian Canadians. NABCs are typically attended by five thousand plus Bengalis wearing traditional costumes and pieces of jewelry, creating an ambiance of Bengali culture.

An Interview with KPC in the context of NABC 2023

"Bongo Sammelan must go on"
His repeated plea
during an hour and half conversation with us

This conversation was long due because the chaotic NABC 2023 created multiple public roars and protests against the company KPC Bengali Hall of Fame, the officially contracted event organizer of NABC 2023.

Here is a recap of the KPC/NABC linkage:
CAB (Cultural Association of Bengal), owner of the brand "NABC"/"Bongo Sammelan",  assigned the NABC 2023 contract to KPC Bengali Hall of Fame.  A core team working under KPC Bengali Hall of Fame included Convener Parthasarathi Mukhopadhyay, Co-conveners Goutam Datta, Abhik DasGupta, Kallol Chatterjee, Subrata Saha, and treasurer Pranab Das. Our investigations into the legitimacy of the KPC Bengali Hall of Fame was verified by procured IRS and New Jersey Govt. Revenue documents.

In our conversation with KPC, we asked him, point blank:
"Your name is involved in the NABC 2023 mess.
Please tell us what  happened?"

His first very emphatic sentence was
"Truth always prevails.
Nothing can stop the truth from surfacing."

Few moments of pause and, then he continued -
"It took us 45 years to build and re-built  Bongo Sammelan.
Please don't destroy it. It's my appeal to the community."

"I have always donated very generously to support Bongo Sammelan.
This year I donated $100,000 and later to meet expenses,
I gave $700,000 cash to the convener of NABC 2023".

I was never involvement with running of the NABC 2023 operations.

I am a businessman. I travel most of the time of the year and I do not interfere with operations run by entrusted groups working under KPC companies.
Similarly, I trusted the NABC 2023 team and I did not know anything about the mismanagement of money. The news surfaced to me when the event was in a mess.

A few  days before NABC 2023, roughly around June 30th., Parthasarathi Mukhopadhaya called me and earnestly requested $700,000 to pay for NABC 2023 running expenses,
else, he said, the program would have to be closed.
I donated the money in cash and preserved Bongo Sammelan this year."

The donation of $700,000 raised many eyebrows in the community and we were told different speculative stories. One that surfaced the most, bothered us, so, we  interrupted KPC and said,
"Some from the Bengali community believe and also reported to us that you made much more than $700,000 and your this donation was just an eye-wash."

A few moments of silence, and then  Kali Pradip Chaudhuri  said,
"The motto  of my businesses is anchored around "Pursuit of Excellence",  fulfilling the needs of the people while contributing to the improvement of the community.
That has always been my vision and mission and evidently, I have always been successful. The organization, KPC Bengali Hall of Fame was envisioned by me and many others, including Prabir Roy of CAB, with the goal to preserve the Bengali community members' contributions in enriching Bengali heritage and culture ideally captioned "Bengali Hall of Fame". "That was the dream", said  Kali Pradip Chaudhuri,  a Bengali originally from  Sylhet, Bangladesh. "

KPC Bengali Hall of Fame is a philanthropic organization in New Jersey sponsored by KPC Group of Companies that accepted the contract from CAB to present NABC 2023 - Bongosammelan  on June 30, July 1, and 2 and all profits made from NABC 2023 would be utilized in constructing and maintaining  a museum of Bengali Hall of Fame with statues, photographs, and works of well recognized Bengalis both in the US, India, Bangladesh and all across the globe."

With a pause,  Kali Pradip Chaudhuri  sighed and said, "But, that did not happen. The brand concept 'Bengali Hall of Fame' has been damaged. But, I am determined to rebuild the image. I will purchase a bigger land and construct a museum to hold and display the works of prominent Bengalis. It's a dream that will come true."

While the NABC 2023 public uproar was very loud through the months of July/August 2023 pointing fingers at the organization KPC Bengali Hall of Fame, for mismanagement and mishandling public money, TriState Bulletin got deep into investigative research and recorded people's voice.  Most people contacted, (98.2%) said -
"It is Parthasarathi Mukhopadhaya
who took singular decisions
in all matters
without consulting anybody,
it is him, who mismanaged the shows and
mishandled money."

In fact, NABC 2023 core team members expressed utter frustrations when Parthasarathi Mukhopadhaya brushed-off their suggestions and repeatedly said, "Don't worry, I will take care of everything". When we asked, Kalipradip Choudhury about this arrogance of Parthasarathi Mukhopadhaya, KPC said, "I knew nothing about such arrogance and mismanagement displayed by Parthasarathi Mukhopadhaya, nobody from the core NABC team ever contacted me. They should have."

However, others involved with NABC 2023 activities reported that it was Parthaswarathi Mukhopadhaya who took singular decisions and never delegated tasks to core team members. Many, many community members like  Prabir Roy, Gautam Dutta, Debi Prosad Palit, Shrabasti  Ghosh Palit, Sudipta Chattopadhyay, and others,  said - "KPC had nothing to do with the mismanagement of public funds, it was all created and manipulated by the trusted NABC 2023 convener, Parthasarathi Mukhopadhaya. The core members of the NABC team also reported having no control over the situation as  Parthasarathi Mukhopadhaya refused to delegate tasks and acted almost like a "dictator" running the show that resulted in a massacre involving cancellation of shows, non-payment to artists and vendors, unreserved hotels...and more that created a "failure history" on the chart of 43 years of NABCs - Bongo Sammelan.

And, once again, Kalipradip Choudhury said, being a business man, traveling most of the time, he knew nothing about the NABC 2023 mess created by Parthasarathi Mukhopadhaya.

"Bongo Sammelan must go on" was the repeated plea of  Kalipradip Chaudhuri,  and we at TriState Bulletin support the thought with an ardent request to CAB to turn the wheel. Please, let some fresh ideas flow from fresh blood. Let fresh management run NABCs to come with the blessings of business tycoons like  Kali Pradip Chaudhuri because money matters, but, by the same token, transparency is a must for public money earned and spent. Almost two months have gone by and we still do not have an audit report on NABC 2023, not even a "quick and dirty" income/expenditure scribble.  Kalipradip Chaudhuri said, "It is expected from the NABC 2023 convener, Parthasarathi Mukhopadhaya."

Our conversation ended with Kali Pradip Chaudhuri, exchanging pleasantries and on a mutual vow that "Bongo Sammelan" must go on.

KPC Bengali Hall of Fame

What surfaced from this messy 2023 NABC is a nice concept - Bengali Hall of Fame. We asked KPC, "Now that conceptually the term 'Bengali Hall of Fame' has lost its credibility, do you feel defeated?" "Absolutely not", KPC said. "In fact we will have a larger plot in New Jersey itself and re-construct a museum showcasing Bengali Hall of Fame." His voice sounded very confident and joyful. He continued, "All those in our community who are opposing this lovely concept, may be out of jealousy, will soon stand aside and watch the construction of a museum hosting 'Bengali Hall of Fame' with their pictures, statues, works, arts and more. I am very confident", KPC said, "This will be another very successful brand which will attract Bengalis worldwide and benefit our next generation. Nothing can stop me from shaping 'Bengali Hall of Fame.'"
