A report from Chairman, Tapas Sanyal
NABC 2021 was celebrated from July 2 to 4 virtually this year after months of exhaustive planning and meetings. The mission of this NABC was to support COVID-19 relief efforts in West Bengal with any surplus fund. An overwhelming response was received to the NABC with the participation of almost 60 organizations throughout North America, West Bengal, the United Kingdom, even from Indonesia.
49 organizations participated in North America Performing Arts Program streamed at Auditorium 2 for three days. A large number of volunteers worked hard for more than three months on setting up virtual standards/ specifications of submission of presentations, selection of programs, review of video files and finally compiling the program ending at streaming. A REVIEW OF NABC GLOBAL 2021
Mandira Chattopadhyay
The melody, the music in the NABC virtual program made us intoxicated. It was so soul-lifting; it was such a solace to watch the program. The master of ceremony Biblab did a fabulous job. Antara was charming. Both were quite easygoing and relaxed and I felt that they were talking to us face to face. I liked all the live anchors for both the domestic and the international programs. They were very eloquent and charming.
On Friday, the program Jalsa was fine with me, but I expected more from them. They could have presented more popular songs, rather than sticking to their own modern compositions. The musical program from Bangladesh was very entertaining. Their rendition of Rabindranath and Bollywood was outstanding and was done with a lot of artistry. The Lalan Fakir songs were presented beautifully. I was excited to witness the enthusiasm and mastery of the popular genres, by the emerging artists. It is a cliché that no one can replace the oldies as sung by the established singers, which is not true in my opinion. I particularly appreciated the Rabindra Sangeet pieces by Biswarup Goswami, and Hemant Kumar songs by Sanjoy Dey. I heard their songs over and over again, These two men certainly carried the conference in my opinion.
Among the known artists, Riddhi Banerjee’s rendition was quite appealing, and I was pleased that she did not make it too ostentatious. Usha Uthup’s rendition of Jodi Tor Dak Shune Keu Na Ase was heart throbbing. The Baul songs were presented flawlessly. Rakhal Das Baul was very sincere and authentic. The Coffee House was enjoyable, with excellent renditions by Anwesha and Durnibar. The discussion on Satyajit Ray was superb and was very engaging. Before this program began, I had the feeling that it would be the same old stuff as in earlier discussions. But quickly my ideas were changed. In fact, what I heard went beyond my expectations. We came to learn a lot about the stellar director from his son Sandeep Ray. He was able to provide answers to each question presented to him with sincerity.
I thought Nabanita Sen’s daughter carried her mother’s legacy quite well during her interview. The groups from Jakarta and London performed quite well. The Sruti Natya dealing with the “manufacturing” of a poet was quite hilarious. The duet performance by the group from the Silicon Valley was particularly impressive as the singer and the instrumentalist presented well known songs in a flashy way. The play Sohag showing the dialog between a husband and a wife in rhyme, covering quarrel and subsequent reconciliation was enjoyable.
It was an exceptionally good idea to end the conference with Amit Kumar the son of the legendary performer Kishor Kumar. He sang quite well and ably represented his legendary father. He presented anecdotes on his father quite humorously. The NABC magazine is excellent where each piece of prose and poetry has been done with passion. The credit goes to Amitabha Bagchi for painstakingly editing the articles.
A Very Special Thanks to Usha Uthup for World Music bringing a sense of Global unity and Human ties. She sang "We are the world, We are the Children" and then Tagore's "Tobe Akla Chalo Re".The program was aptly titled "Heal the World"
