Why Bengalis are predominantly "Shakti Worshippers?" Some findings:
Markandya Puran, dated to the ~3rd century CE is one of the 18 Purans Hindus follow as ancient scriptures. It is mentioned that the dwellers of the tri-angular land, now called West Bengal, caressing the Bay of Bengal, were "Shakti Pujaris" - worshippers of the feminine force of nature.
So we have so many Shakti temples in Bengal and so we Bengalis celebrate Shakti puja in all forms - Durga, Kali, Lakshmi, Saraswati and 10 other forms of Goddess Durga mentioned in Devi Mahatmya - Sanskrit:देवीमाहात्म्यम् . With Mahisasura Mardini, a part of Devi Mahatmya, Bengal is the only state in India that celebrates Mahalaya praising the victory of Shakti over Mahisasur, the demon. Voicing Chandi Path, hymns praising Goddess Durga by Birendra Krishna Bhadra, first heard on All India Radio in 1942, continues to win Bengali hearts worldwide. Bengalis, pray - রূপং দেহি জয়ং দেহি যশো দেহি দ্বিষো জহি meaning, beautify me, grant me victory, honour, fame and destroy my enemies, Oh! Goddess Durga.

জাগো দূর্গা, জাগো দশ প্রহরণ ধারিনী.. what lovely wordings to invoke Goddess Durga. This classic program was jointly organized in 1931 by Pankaj Mallik, Premankur Aatorthi, Birendra Krishna Bhadra, Nripendra Krishna Mukhopadhyay and Raichand Boral known to be the father of Indian Film music.

আমার দুগ্গা
আমার দুগ্গা এখনও হে-রাইড চেপে আসছে। গায়ের রঙ ঝলসে গেছে রদ্দুরে। চুল উস্কোখুস্ক, রুক্ষ। হাত-পায়ে মোটে স্থিরতা নেই। এই ধুপ করে পড়ে যাচ্ছে তো এই আবার টলমলে পায়ে সিঁড়ি বেয়ে ওঠার চেষ্টা করছে। সজাগ টালমাটাল দুগ্গা মাঝেমাঝেই ডাগর চোখে তাকিয়ে থাকে মায়াভরা মুখখানা নিয়ে। আমার মনে আনন্দ হয়, “এই তো আমার সর্বজায়ার দুর্গা। আমার ক্লান্ত, পরিশ্রান্ত, স্পর্ধা, স্বপ্নসুন্দর, ইচ্ছে-পথের পাঁচালী।”
রাস্তা থেকেই ফোন আসে, “মা কুমড়োফুলগুলো সরিয়ে খানিক শিউলি আনো দেখি। ফল ইন অটম্ অনেক হয়েছে এবার শরৎ চাই আমার।”
আমি বলি, “তুই বাপু আর জ্বালাতন করিস না। আজ তোর পেট গুরগুর কাল কান সনসন। পুজোতেও না জানি কি ভোগ খাবি, কি ভেল্কি দেখাবি।কি হবে শরৎসুন্দরী হয়ে।”
দুগ্গা বলল, “ আহ মা ডোন্ট ওয়ারি। কৈলাশ-কলকাতায় সব ওর্গানিক না খেয়েও দিব্য ছিলাম তো। এখানেও তাই থাকব। তুমি বরং আমার ড্রেস ট্রায়ালটা দেখো”।
সেই চিরাচরিত “ভদ্র” সুরে হোয়াটস্আ্যপে আগমনী নোটিফিকেশন আসতেই দেখি কাঁশফুলে সেজে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে আমার ছোট্ট দুগ্গা। আসমানি রঙ লেগেছে শ্যামলা দুইগালে আর শরৎ মেঘের চিকচিকে রোদ এসে পড়েছে কাজললতা দু’চোখে। আদর করে দি ছবিটায়। লক্ষ্মীমন্ত মোটেও না, বড্ড ছটফটে, দামাল, ডানপিটে আমার ছোট্ট দুর্গা। “নজর লাগে যদি”, হাল্কা কেঁপে ওঠে দুর্বল মায়ের মন। আর ঠিক তখনই ত্রিনয়ন আশ্বাস দেয় আমায়। জরাজীর্ণ দুর্বল কাঠামোয় জেগে ওঠে অন্তরাত্মা। জাগে উমা। প্রত্যেকটি মায়ের গর্ভ থেকে জন্ম নেয় যে দেবী তার নজরে থাকে প্রত্যেকটি সময়, মহাকাল। এতটুকু আঘাতে সে চন্ডী। অমাবস্যায় রেশম-মোড়া শরীরেই জন্ম নেয় যা কঠিন, স্বয়ং কৌশিকী। ছোট্ট ছোট্ট পায়ে চলে আসছে দেবীপক্ষ। কোলে আসছে আমার আদুরে উমা। প্রশ্ন করি, “এমন শাড়ী কোথায় পেলি মা?” দুগ্গা উত্তর দেয়, সারিসারি ভালোবাসা দিয়ে ঢাকাই জামদানী বানিয়ে দিয়েছে মাসিমনী। কার্টসি - নতুন জামা ফ্রম কৈলাশ, থুড়ি কলকাতা।
সবাইকে জানাই দুর্গাপুজোর শুভেচ্ছা ও ভালোবাসা। এই পুজোয় আশা রাখি অন্ধকার থেকে আলোয় ফেরার।
সুচিন্তায় ভালো কাটুক সবার পুজো।
